Slow Development
Children suffering from hunger will mainly develop slowly in two ways. One way is in their physical growth. Many children are reported to be stunted in their growth, or to be shorter than average, due to lack of nutrients they would normally have if they had a full, healthy breakfast.
The lack of nutrients also affects social and brain development. Children will have a tough time socially, since they are lacking focus and are irritable due to their hunger pains. In regards to brain development, the World Food Programme suggests iodine deficiency is the world's single greatest cause of mental retardation and brain damage.
